The Bachelor of Science Programme is a four-year programme organized into eight semesters. The final two semesters are devoted exclusively to a research project.
The B.S., course offered by IISc is unique. This will be a combination of inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary programme helping students to pursue research as a career. The normal B.Sc., programme will be concentrating on maximum one subject, in some special cases it will be inter-disciplinary combinations like B.Sc., (Maths and Computer Science Hons.) like these very few institutions are focusing on research orientation. The regular B.Sc., will not have any research orientation and the student knowledge will be limited to one vertical like Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry or any other subjects.
For a well balanced and well rounded learning experience, each student is required to take a minimum number of courses in engineering & humanities. The programme is designed to provide a deep interdisciplinary experience to the students.
Systematic exposure to the pillars of scientific, mathematical and engineering principles will take place during the first three semesters. In each of these semesters, the students will take one course each in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, engineering and humanities. Teaching of the compulsory core courses in science and engineering will include substantial components of laboratory demonstrations and hands-on experiments.
The students will also be exposed to courses in humanities that will help them appreciate science and its societal implications and also sharpen their skills in communicating science to both experts and to society at large.
At the beginning of the fourth semester, each student will choose a discipline for specialisation ("major") according to his/her academic interest. The following specialisations are available:
All these disciplines are interdisciplinary in nature in that there will be adequate exposure to other disciplines. The number of students in each discipline will be approximately the same. Both the academic interest of the student and his/her performance in the first three semesters will be considered to allocate the major disciplines. In addition to a "major" discipline, a student may also choose a discipline as a "minor" discipline. In each of these semesters, the students will take four courses in the chosen major and minor disciplines. They will also take one elective course in engineering and one seminar course in humanities.
A research project will be started in the seventh semester along with advanced elective courses. The final semester will be devoted exclusively to the project. The project should be in the chosen major discipline or an interdisciplinary topic that has a substantial overlap with the major discipline.
The uniqueness of this programme lies in its interdisciplinary approach, strong flavour of engineering, exposure to disciplines in social sciences, and a one year research project.
There are plenty of research opportunities are available in India. Especially rapidly increasing innovations, scientific advancements fuel the research oriented manpower in every industry. Based on your areas of interest one can choose their areas interest in Chemicals, BioTechnology, Engineering,Medical Sciences, Engineering sciences, Pharmaceutical, Research and Development (R&D) in all the major research organizations will come for placement in IISc. Even GE had setup its John F Welch Research Centre (JFWRC) in Bangalore and Ambani’s had set up major research facilities Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City in Navi Mumbai and several players had national presence in research. Research has a very good career prospects than any other field. All the professors in major IITs are having research projects worth more than few crores funded for our Defence Projects, Aerospace Projects of ISRO, DRDO and so on. Getting admission is tough, but cent percent placement is guaranteed in reputed organizations in India and abroad.
IISc is a reputed and pioneer institution and focusing research in the world. Even eminent scientist like Sir.C.V. Raman passed out of IISc., Bangalore only. This institutions produced many eminent scientists for the Nation. The integrated B.S. programme will give good exposure in fundamental sciences with a blend of engineering and humanities. This is a unique programme offered at only at IISc, Bangalore and IIT Kanpur. The well established lab facilities in IISc will help you to pursue Astronomy and Astrophysics and it will give excellent opportunities in the field. The location of Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Bangalore and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will definitely help you to explore more research avenues in this filed.
The B.S degree in biology involves Research in Neurosciences , Microbiology & Cell Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Biochemistry , Molecular Reproduction & Developmental Genetics, and Ecological Sciences departments. The UG programme is the transdisciplinary in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Humanities and Engineering. contains multidisciplinary features of biotechnology, fundamental biology , health, bio-engineering , agriculture, synthetic life and systems biology.
The IISc offers a unique undergraduate inter-disciplinary programme in known as Bachelor of Science (B.S). The duration of the programme is four years.
Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics, Physics are the major subjects available in the Bachelor of Science(B.S) Degree in IISc.
